TIME TO MARKET

Service Providers and Telcos are expressing tremendous interest in solutions based on this standard with many RFQs and RFPs based on TR-069 solutions issued, and others are making TR-069 functionality a requirement for all new CPE purchases, placing increasing pressure on vendors to expand the capabilities of their product offerings. As one leading US telco told Dimark, “It’s not a matter of if we will deploy TR-069 across our network, but when. And between now and then, we will deploy TR-069 CPE to fully leverage the benefits as quickly and widely as possible."

As such, a CPE product without this functionality would be locked out of any new business.
Some members of the embedded systems development community have stepped to the plate and are starting to offer TR-069 capabilities as a check-box addition to their core product. However, the market still faces a number of time-to-market challenges:

  • TR-069 Expertise – Dimark Technologies estimates it can take over one engineering-year of background research simply to build enough expertise to properly implement TR-069.
  • TR-069 Code Development – Developing TR-069 embedded code from scratch is a complex operation requiring expertise in many technological areas, with resulting impacts on time to market and budgets.
  • Related Specifications Development – Developing TR-069 embedded code is difficult and complex, but developing TR-104 with its layered data structure, or TR-111 and its STUN issues, as well as the myriad other related specifications is more difficult.
  • TR-069 Compatibility Assurance – Simply developing a TR-069 client doesn’t ensure that it will work with the various TR-069 servers in the market. Many existing TR-069 compliant vendors are finding themselves rewriting TR-069 to be compliant. Naturally, the other related specifications create their own interoperability issues.
  • “Custom” Implementations – Related to the compatibility issues above, there also exists many Telco-developed implementations that may not adhere to the specifications and will require custom work to implement. As described above, Dimark has done this work in the past, and is willing and able to do this work in the future.
